DISTRICT AGRICULTURE INFORMATION

The region comprises of DakshinDinajpur district, Uttar Dinajpur (except Islampur Sub-division) and some parts of Malda, Birbhum, Bankura, Bardhaman, East Midnapore, Howrah &Hoogly district of West Bengal. Some parts of the district is also included under red and lateritic zone. DakshinDinajpur district is lying between 260 35'15''and 250 10'55''N latitude and 890 0' 30'' to 870 48'30'' E longitude at an elevation of 15 m above mean sea level. The average annual rainfall is 1690 mm with about 66 rainy days. The soils are light, medium and heavy in texture, upland being lighter and medium to lowlands being heavier. The characteristic feature of this zone is inundation caused by sudden heavy rainfall due to lack of proper drainage facilities. During kharif season rice is the major crop. Other important crops grown in pre kharif season is Ausrice, jute and vegetable and in rabi season potato, mustard, vegetable, wheat, pulses, groundnut and sesame are the main crops. The soils are low in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content and the fertilizer consumption (N, P, K) is 89.88 kg/ h.
